Los Angeles-based Seksu Roba — translated literally from the Japanese as “sex donkey” — is made up of Korean producer/thereminist Sukho Lee and Japanese artist/designer/vocalist Lun*na Menoh. Together, the duo serves up a spaced-out dish of bachelor-pad lounge pop that — were she still actively saving the universe today — would surely garner Barbarella’s stamp of approval. With titles like “Space Race” and “Cha Cha on the Moon,” the band’s 2000 self-titled debut was chock-full of trippy ’60s soundtrackesque chansons. 2003’s Pleasure Vibrations trades in some swingin’ grooves for more of a synthy ’80s feel. While the intergalactic psychedelia shtick now seems somewhat dated, Seksu Roba’s sound is nonetheless well-crafted and experiential, akin to that of bionic contemporaries Fantastic Plastic Machine and Tipsy. Best of all, their live shows — commanded by a bewigged and sparkly Lun*na — feature Erector, a dancing robot who, according to their website, “tends to shock audiences with his large endowment and bizarre video projections.” Kinda gives a whole new meaning to the phrase turned on.
