DIY Chocolate

Nowadays you can design your own pizza, customize your own hamburger, build your own ice cream cone, and create your own pasta from a selection of noodles, sauces, and proteins. Wouldn’t it be great if you could do the same with chocolate? 

Uh, well, yes. 

And, in fact, you can. With Chocomize, a website founded by a trio of young entrepreneurs, you start with a 3.5-ounce bar of high-quality Belgian dark, milk, or white chocolate, add as many goodies as your taste buds can stand, then kick back and wait about four days for your own personal chocolate creation to be produced and shipped to you. 

Prices are quite reasonable. Bars cost $3.85 for dark and milk

chocolate, $3.95 for white. Add-ons range from 40 cents for sea salt to

$3.90 for 23-carat gold leaf, which means you can build a seriously

deranged chocolate bar for under $10. 

The list of add-ons,

btw, is pretty impressive. There are six categories: nuts and seeds,

fruits, herbs and spices, candy, decorations, and other stuff. Under

nuts are everything from almonds to wasabi peas; fruits include various

dried berries, banana chips, and diced lemon peel; for herbs and

spices, there are mini-chipotles, lavender, sea salt, curry powder, and

more. Then you can get really wacky with gummy bears and pop rocks,

crystallized rose petals and gold leaf, beef jerky and coffee beans and

pretzels.

I ordered my own “Tropical Madness” bar, dark

chocolate with roasted pistachios, diced papaya, hot curry powder,

cocoa nibs, and veggie bacon. I’ll report back when it arrives, though

if it sucks, I’m afraid there’s only one person to take the blame.
