No. 17: Lobster Roll From Kelly’s Landing
Sweet, succulent lobster is one of the rare foods that manages to taste even more luxurious than it is. Which is what makes a lobster roll such an attractive offering: here’s a dish
that takes a fine ingredient like lobster and turns it into a sandwich
fit for the everyman. Kelly’s Landing in Fort Lauderdale has perfected
the art. The 20-plus-year-old restaurant serves its rolls two ways —
with chilled lobster, chopped into a rough salad with celery and
parsley, sprinkled liberally with Old Bay, and wedged into a toasted
roll. Or hot with drawn butter, the way purists still prefer theirs.
Both versions are stellar, with fresh Maine lobster providing the star
spot. With lobster rolls this good available year-round in Florida,
those Yanks have even more reason to be jealous of the Sunshine State.
