Ōtagaki Rengetsu (1791-1875) was perhaps the most well-known female artist and poetess of nineteenth century Japan. Born in Kyoto, Nobu (her given name) was adopted by the samurai Ōtagaki Teruhisa and his wife. After a life of great tragedy and loss, Nobu became a nun and took the name Rengetsu, which means “Lotus Moon.” Rengetsu collaborated with potters, painters, lacquer ware craftsmen and a variety of other artists to create a myriad of unique works of art inscribed with her profoundly personal, witty and spiritual verse. Poetry in Clay will highlight an exquisite selection from the Johnstone-Fong Collection, the largest private collection of works by Ōtagaki Rengetsu in the United States.
