When it comes down to deciding where to go for lunch, I always forget about Fernanda’s International Market on Oakland Park Blvd. and Federal Hwy. But after grabbing this muffuletta sandwich there a week ago, I’ll be sure to keep the place in my rotation from now on. As far as submarines, grinders, hoagies, or whatever you want to call them go, Fernanda’s deli counter pumps out some stellar ones using fresh ingredients from their prepared foods case and Boar’s Head meats. At around $8 each and hefty in size, these subs are also a good buy.

My muffuletta came on a sesame seed-coated roll, similar to the one’s at Central Grocery in New Orleans (unfortunately, Fernanda’s was out of the sesame ciabatta at the time, which would’ve been an exact match). It had an inch-worth of salami and capacolla and a few slices of dry provolone cheese. I could’ve done without the lettuce and tomato, but the marinated olive salad that Fernanda’s makes in house was excellent. I only wish there was more of it on the bread.

When you get your sandwich at Fernanda’s you take it to one of the many

mosaic-tiled tables near the market’s wine isle. Just grab a frosty Dr. Brown’s

soda, and you’re good to go. If you’re not in the mood for sandwiches, Fernanda’s prepared food case is in the east side of the market and has everything from salads to marinated mushrooms and chicken Milanese. Most of the options there are inexpensive too.
