But with home-style food this fast and fresh, Peniel’s Palace may yet find its crowd among the express-lunch set. A daily special of catfish is plunked into the deep fryer to order and comes shimmering with a spicy, golden crust. Barbecue chicken sees nearly half a bird coated in a smoky, mahogany sauce — like the catfish, it comes with two sides for under eight bucks. On your lunch break, you can sip a sweet tea and watch the inoffensive taupe room clouded with bistro art, still largely untouched from the café that occupied the spot before it. Like any good Southern place, breakfast here is the heartiest meal of the day, featuring steak and eggs and pork chops and grits and that liquid crack called sausage gravy.
