It turns out, some scientists now believe potatoes may in fact be carnivorous plants. The tubers actually have sport sticky hairs that trap insects, a trait they share with petunias and campion flowers, often called catchflys.
Well-known carnivorous plants like the venus fly trap trap insects and then “digest” their prey. But species of plants like potato do not have digestive systems. Rather, they use their roots to absorb the nutrients in decaying animal matter.
While there are only six types of killer plants officially recognized as carnivorous, this new thinking could legitimize many more as killers. Think about that next time you bite into a French fry.
