At first, the body of a 23-year old woman discovered in room 108 of The Grand Motel at 3:23 a.m. on Valentines Day was reported as a suicide.
But when detectives arrived on the scene, things didn’t match her boyfriend’s story.
Carlos Cadavid, 23, had called the Broward Sheriff’s Office that morning to report that his girlfriend, Krizia Nunez, had taken her own life with a gun.
They had been dating for only four days.
Detectives arriving to the hotel, located on 430 S. Federal Hwy. in Dania Beach, quickly surmised that the physical evidence in the hotel room did not match what Cadavid had told deputies, according to a BSO report.
BSO deputies say they also found Xanax and marijuana at the scene.
An autopsy on the woman’s body by the Broward County Medical Examiner’s office soon confirmed what detectives had figured. Cadavid had shot and killed Nunez and then tried to stage the crime scene to make it look like a suicide.
According to records, Cadavid had been in trouble with the law before, having been charged in the past with carrying a concealed firearm, tampering with physical evidence, driving with a suspended driver’s license, failing to register a vehicle, failing to wear a safety belt, public consumption of alcohol, and leaving highway to avoid traffic.
Cadavid had played baseball at Hollywood Hills High School in 2006.
But, as can be seen in Cadavid’s Facebook photos, he lost his right leg. He had been shot in the leg, and had to have it amputated as a result, according to Cadavid’s brother. His brother says Cadavid’s been having a hard time since that incident.
On Friday, Police ruled Nunez’s death a homicide. Later that afternoon, Cadavid confessed to detectives that he had, in fact, killed his girlfriend of four days and was charged with first-degree murder.
